Ocean Gate NJ Area

Ocean Gate is located on the south shore of the Toms River in Ocean County, NJ. It is nestled between Pine Beach Borough to its west and the expansive preserved lands of the Forestry National Wildlife Refuge to its south.

The Borough is .4 square miles, of which is mostly land. The north side of the borough is flanked by the Toms River adjacent to the expansive Back Bay.

The Borough is known for the best beaches and boardwalk on the entire Toms River.

Ocean Gate NJ History

In the late 1800’s Ocean Gate was known as Good Luck Point. The Pennsylvania Railroad trains passed through Good Luck Point and over the bay onto to the Island Beach Resorts. Ocean Gate was named for the wooden trestle bridge that was built over the bay to link the mainland to the ocean towns.

As President of the Eastern Building Company of Philadelphia, Charles Guttentag , purchased farmland and divided it into streets.

Portions of Berkeley Township were detached to form Ocean Gate Borough in 1918. In 1909 the first summer cottages in Ocean Gate were built. A church, school, telephone lines, post office and businesses followed . The railroad bridge between Ocean Gate and Seaside Park burned on December 1, 1946 and the train service was suspended.
