Beachwood, NJ is located on southern shore of the Toms River in Ocean County, NJ. To the northwest is River South, Berkeley Township is to the west and southeast, while Pine Beach is to the northeast.

Beachwood covers 2.849 square miles, 2.848 of which is land. The north side fronts the Toms River.This Boro is known for its bluffs overlooking the Toms River and its riverfront boardwalk and beach facilities.

Beachwood NJ History

beachwood old sky shotBertram Chapman Mayo founded of Beachwood. As head of the New York Tribune Newspaper, Mayo designed “the greatest subscription premium ever offered”. Beginning in 1914, if you purchased a 20 x 100 foot lot, a six-month subscription to the Tribune would be included.

Trainloads of prospective buyers flocked to the little known area and for many of them, it was love at first sight. By 1915 club house, yacht club, pier, bath house, railroad station and a 37 room lodge and over 90 cottages had been built.

Within a year residents began to call Beachwood home and formed a Property-Owner’s-Association in 1916. In 1917 the Association voted to become incorporated under a commission form of government. In the 1970’s the commission became a Borough.
