Bay Head NJ Area

Bay Head NJ is located on Island Beach in the northern portion of Ocean County, NJ. It is nestled between Point Pleasant Beach to the North, and Mantoloking to the south.

The Borough covers .7 square miles, .59 of which is land. The west side of the Borough is flanked by Point Pleasant and the expansive Backbay. The east side provides beachfront to the majestic Atlantic Ocean.

The Borough is known for the Bay Head Train Station which is the southern terminus for the rail line that runs northward along the north Jersey Coast. It Is also known for its quaint business district along bridge avenue and shoppers wharf adjacent to twilight lake.

Bay Head NJ History

John Hance and Judah Allen were the first to purchase the Bay Head Area. The Loveland Family first settled in area around 1837. As such, the area became known as Love land town. At the time, the area was part of Shrewsbury Township and in Monmouth County.

David Mount established the Bay head Land Company in 1876. Loveland became part of Point Pleasant when the Bayhead Land Company developed the parcel eastward of Loveland. At the time the parcel was part of Brick Township and became known as Bay Head. Bay Heads first Hotel and Rail Station were built. By 1882 the Borough had its own Post Office and 75 residents.

In 1886 this portion of Brick Township was detached to form Bay Head, appropriately named as it is located at the head of the bay.

The Jersey Central Railroad arrived from New York in 1882 while Pennsylvania Railroad came across the bay through Trenton and Toms River. Last stop for both was Bay Head.
