Barnegat NJ is located in the southern portion of Ocean County, NJ. It is nestled between Ocean Township to the north and Stafford Township to the south.

The Township covers 40.8 square miles, 34.7 of which is land. The west side of Barnegat light is flanked by the expansive Pinelands. The east side fronts the expansive bay.

The Township is known for its Municipal Bayfront Dock that boasts a boardwalk, pavilion, and boat ramp.

Barnegat NJ History

In 1846 portions of Dover Township (now Toms River Township) and Stafford Township were detached to form Union Township. In 1850 Union Township was detached from Monmouth County to become part of the newly formed Ocean County.

Portions of Union Township were detached to form Lacey Township (1871), Ocean Township(1876), Harvey Cedars(1894) and Long Beach Township(1899).

The remaining Union Township changed its name to Barnegat Township in 1977.
